DRIVE SYSTEMS

The demand for measurement systems providing high resolution and highly dynamic response is leading to a dramatic increase in the use of MR sensors in drive systems and components. The inherent robustness of MR sensors allows their use in demanding environments (high/low temperatures, high humidity), where other sensors don't work or don't last.

Typical applications

  • Integrated rotary encoder for torque motor
  • Linear encoder for direct drive motor
  • Shaft-end encoder for compact motor
  • Integrated rotary encoder for servo motor

APPLICATION EXAMPLE: BALL BEARING WITH INTEGRATED ENCODER

Requirements

An incremental encoder is to be integrated within the housing of a ball bearing. The encoder shall provide a resolution of at least 1,25°.

Key Specifications

Measurement distance:
40 mm
Resolution:
72 A and B periods (288 quadcounts representing 1,25°)
Accuracy:
< 2°
Temperature range:
-20 °C up to +120 °C

Solution from Sensitec

A GLS0712 GMR sensor is used to scan a gear wheel with 72 teeth. A comparator is connected directly to the Wheatstone bridge for signal conditioning.

Why use MR sensor technology?

  • Simple assembly and adjustment
  • No further calibration necessary after final assembly
  • A and B signals with 90° phase shift are generated by a single sensor element
