The speed sensor is suitable for scanning steel toothed wheels (ferromagnetic). It was specially developed for demanding measurement tasks in engine test stands and is mainly used for speed and rotational angle measurement. The sensor provides a digital and analog speed signal at an ambient temperature of up to 150 ° C.

Applications:

  • Speed measurement
  • Torsional vibration measurements
  • Rotary angle measurements

The measuring head works with a magnetically preloaded, high-precision AMR sensor. The ferromagnetic tooth structure flying past the sensor changes the sensor's surrounding magnetic field and causes a sinusoidal change to the sheet resistances and/or voltage change in the rhythm of the tooth structure.

Sensors and evaluation electronics are closely related to one another. The electronic evaluation unit is remote, which made it possible to develop a very compact sensor. Teflon cables are used to protect against high temperatures or moisture. These are also encased in a flexible protective tubing. The sensor head is completely sealed and the evaluation electronics are protected against moisture.

Challenging measurement tasks often require interdisciplinary collaboration.

We are happy to assist you in integrating the speed sensor into your test environment. We offer individual work packages whose scope you can determine yourself.

General information

The speed sensor was developed for use in motor sport. Several criteria had to be met in order to meet the corresponding requirements:

  • Small size
  • Precise switching points
  • Working distance of up to 5 mm
  • Tooth pitches 2 mm – 8 mm
  • Sensor temperature stability of up to 150°
  • Digital and analog speed signals
  • Integrated temperature sensor
  • Special service functions

Measurement principle

The measurement is based on a magnetically preloaded highly sensitive AMR sensor with very low hysteresis. The working distance to the encoder wheel can be changed in most areas. Due to the high bandwidth of the sensor, the system operates almost independently of the speed. The measurement is not affected by dirt or oil.

Components

The speed sensor consists of a sensor sealed in a sleeve and remote evaluation electronics.  Owing to this separation, the sensor housing in very small. Both units are hard-wired to each other by a flexible and temperature-resistant cable. The cable is additionally sheathed in a protective hose as standard.

The sensor assembly is directional. A threadless sleeve allows the infinitely variable distance adjustment to the encoder wheel either by clamping or gluing. Alternatively, we offer the construction of individual mounting flanges. The remote evaluation electronics are enclosed with a robust shrink sleeve and are thus protected from moisture.

Sensor

Precise AMR sensor technology with optimized design for use on motor test benches. The sensor cable is connected directly to the evaluation unit. The sensor exhibits minimal temperature dependence. The measurement is not affected by dirt or oil.

Evaluation unit

The evaluation electronics are housed in a robust aluminum housing. The sensor signal is optimally conditioned there and the digital and analog speed signal is generated. With the optional UART interface it is possible to change the pulse-pause ratio of the digital speed signal.

The integrated microcontroller also allows additional functions such as operating hour counter sand the storage of individual data. The connection cable to the user interface is open, but can be made according to customer specifications.

Service

We offer the following services:

  • Adjustment of the housing such as a customized mounting flange
  • Test measurements in laboratory settings with the customer's sensor wheel
